Final Project. Complete an individual final project that
addresses an ongoing issue or
problem that an organization or industry is experiencing that you may
have insight into. The issue or problem must be relevant to organizational
life.

The purpose of this assignment
is to weave together what you have learned in this course and what you have
learned from (some of) your general education courses with an issue, problem or
question you have researched that applies to either your current career or
future career. You need to illustrate how the readings, theories, and concepts
used in this class and one or more of your previous general education
experiences help to inform your understanding of the issue or problem in
relation to organization life (previous general education courses might be
something from history, political science, philosophy, psychology,
anthropology, economics, etc.).

This exploration must involve a
review of the relevant literature, but may also involve other forms of research
– surveys, interviews, observations, digital stories, etc. Conclude with
recommendations for resolution of the issue or problem. (Pick MLA or APA style
and stick with it. Formatting, in-text citations, everything.)
Suggested Final Draft format:
I: Introduction/Background: Identify and describe the
organization’s organizational issue, problem or question in your area of
concentration that is relevant to
organizations in a way that allows the topic to be used as a way for you to
illustrate your expertise on the subject and leverage your experience and
observations. Make sure you are keeping the organization or industry in the
forefront. Context is important here.
II: Literature Review: Develop a review of the outside literature
on the organizational issue, problem, or question. Do not attempt to resolve
your specific issue of focus in this section. Do not cover the readings of the
course in this section (that’s the next section). Do not fully explore your problem at this
point; just introduce and explain other efforts that have been published that
address your issue and why that material applies to your topic. Try to avoid magazines and general websites
(those would be great for fleshing out specific ideas and examples in section 1
and 4), but do use trade publications, research journal articles, etc., that
you find in the library’s online archives.
You will bring into this section information directly related to
organizations, but you can also bring in publications from the fields of your
general education courses (such as psychology, sociology, history, etc.) that
might be relevant.
III: Course concepts (feel free to combine this with the Literature
Review, but it is important that you utilize both course readings and outside
theory): Summarize the relevant readings, theories, and concepts used in this
class and describe the ways in which the general education disciplines inform
the field of organizational life (as above, connect the general education
concepts with the specific course themes that are relevant to your issue)
. Again, do not simply discuss your
specific problem or issue in this section; introduce and discuss the course
concepts that relate to your issue,
and contextualize them in the situation of a specific organization or industry
facing a specific issue (Note: you don’t
need to cover all of the course concepts; just include those that have a direct
relationship to your issue).
IV: Conclusions and discussion: Examine your specific issue,
problem or question in light of the literature review (and other research) from
Section 2 and the above summary of relevant course concepts in Section 3, and
apply your new knowledge to your organizational issue, problem or question.
This is where you connect the other sections to your issue, bringing everything
together. Using that earlier information, explore your issue in depth in an
attempt to better understand it. Connect those earlier sources to aspects of
your issue in an effort to help explain things.
End this section with some resolution, plan of action, or
recommendations for improvement. Be as
specific and clear about your recommendations as possible (think of this part
as a roadmap that you want leadership to follow to resolve the issue).

The project
must be completed individually, and the final paper must be 2,500 to 4,000 words in length (about 10
– 15 pages typically, using APA or MLA format).

The final
written project (Sections 1 – 4 above combined together into one seamless,
coherent document) is due by 11:59PM EST on Sunday,
May 8th.
