CCTV simply stands for Closed – Circuit Television. We are familiar with CCTV as it is used for security purposes, however, the technology was not intended for home and business security. In fact, when Walter Bruch created the technology it could only be viewed through live streams. Walter Bruch “… initially for the purpose of learning about weapons, not people.” (Brafdord, 2019) CCTV’s first documented use was in Germany’s military, the technology enabled them to watch rockets launch from the safety of a bunker. Once the United States picked up on this new advancement in technology, scientists used to conduct nuclear weapon research safely. Then finally in 1949, CCTV technology became available on the commercial market. I believe
that CCTV technology could still be in use throughout the scientific field. There have been
many advancements made to the technology throughout the years. However, it is not being
used today as it was intended to be used, although it is very effective at helping to solve
crimes and protect homes and businesses. However, there are limitations, one of those limits
being
that it has a specific amount of storage to save video and audio. Most often after the device
has reached max storage, the technology will delete data to make room for more. This can be
fixed, in a way, the data can be transferred to a hard drive. That way no data is lost and there is always space, however, there are human limits as well. In most situations, businesses are
not saving surveillance footage nor is a family of three. I do not think CCTV has ever been used for illegal activity. This technology should be vital to homeland security and the general
population of the U.S. It seems like everyone has some sort of CCTV for surveillance of their
homes, which can catch criminal activity. In the end, it helps out both ends.
“A fusion center is a collaborative effort of two or more agencies that provide resources, expertise, and information to the center with the goal of maximizing their ability to detect,
prevent, investigate, and respond to criminal and terrorist activity.” (DHS, 2021) Fusion Centers are places where information is shared between different agencies and different levels, as
well. It is very much effective as it does what it was meant to do, share information about
terrorist threats and other threats. Fusion centers also assist in front-line enforcements. This makes it seem like the only limitation they have are running out of manpower in a time of need. I believe that fusion centers hold a lot of critical information, which means if the wrong
people get ahold of it, something bad could happen. However, I don’t think it could be part of illegal activity. Once again, I believe that fusion centers have a big impact on homeland security and the general population of the U.S. because it is the main hub for information sharing, providing resources, gather and analyze the threat information. If not for these centers then there would be information all over the place and it would never reach the individuals that need to know the
information.
“Biometric scanners are hardware used to capture the biometric for verification of identity.” This technology turns you and your body into a key in order to enter or access a system. The purpose of this technology was intended to make access easier and to add an extra layer of protection to a system. So, yes, the technology is effective as it was intended. I can’t find a limitation for this technology, however, systems can always be hacked. I feel as though this is technology that is often used in internet crimes. Individuals that hack for a living are more likely to have biometric scanning instead of passwords, it’s faster and mostly foolproof. I think this technology is very important to the government for knowledge and use in their own systems. However, I don’t really think it is of much importance to the general population, other than cell ID locks.
