This assignment is intended to be a summation of what you
have learned from class readings and discussions this semester. The question you will be addressing in this
essay is:
What is modernity?
Does the “modern mind” think any differently than the human mind in
other periods of history? In what
ways? Which developments in intellectual
history in the twentieth century have been most characteristic of the modern
mind, and contributed most to the distinctive phenomenon of modernity? How does modern art characterize the modern
mind? Give examples from various
intellectual fields, with a focus on the fine arts.
Successful essays will include plenty of specific examples
of artworks and ideas from readings and class discussions, as well as
vocabulary terms associated with art history and visual analysis that you have
learned in this and other art classes.
