How to:
1. Find and study population data for Europe 200 – 1700 AD provided on class handouts.
2. Make a single graph showing population data for both Europe and for France. An accurate
graph is a required element for this assignment. Graphs must have well-labeled axes (set pop as
y; time as x). Insert the graph into your document.
3. Let the graph show you the distinct phases of European population development. Should be
six or seven phases.
4. Use handouts, your notes, Kagan textbook, and additional readings (Duby, 6.g.) to find
information that can explain population changes.
S. Write explanations for each phase, with total words = 1,200.
Hints:
Use Kagan TOC and index to help find info.
The most common and most important factors in pre-modern population movements are
agricultural advances and declines, but others, like plague or turmoil, might be important
one-time events.
Use multiple causes to build strong explanations.
