1. Kiki Petrsosino’s sonnet crown is (obviously!) different in form from Laymon’s and Tolentino’s essays. Reading and thinking about poetry can teach you to write better prose. Find something that you can take from Petrosino’s sonnet crown into your own writing. Can you borrow her use of imagery or allusion? Her use of alliteration, consonance, assonance? Where she shifts from one poem to another, from one line to another? Her use of repetition? 300-500 words. 2. Pick a word that has recurred in at least 2 of the attatched texts titled 1.pdf – 4.pdf (although you’re welcome to draw on more than 2 texts), or a concept about which multiple writers are writing but for which they are using different words. Trace the word/concept through the different writers. Why do they define it in different ways? Or do they all understand it to mean the same thing? Or do they seem to agree on some aspects of it but not on others? 300-500 words. 3. The University of Virginia (UVA) that we studied this unit has deep racial history. What histories would you want to make visible at UVA? Is there an identity group, or an event, or something else, that you want UVA students and faculty to know about? You might think of populations you want to either know more about or shed light on– think of Sylvia Chong’s article about Asians and Asian-Americans at UVA, etc. You might also consider the representations of indigenous peoples at UVA, or Latinx people, or workers, including but not limited to those who were enslaved. There’s also a theme that’s run through some of the readings but that we haven’t addressed head-on: the history of women at UVA. Those aren’t the only identity categories you might want to explore or memorialize, though, so feel free to range more widely in your response. 300-500 words. 4. Write a 300-350 word response to Lipsitz’s article. Some things you might write about: what is his argument, and do you agree with it? What aspects of it stick out to you, either because you think they’re correct/useful or because you want to argue with them?
