The facility has a homegrown order-entry system. They purchased the bar code administration software from a vendor. It was initially implemented in a couple of units. One concern of IT has been the cost of the program and equipment. There are scanners in each patient’s room where nurses scan their badges and then the patient’s armband. The application makes it possible to print out a list of medications when they get to the room and complete the scans. Nurses sometimes carry this printout because patients’ armbands can be difficult to locate, or nurses do not want to disturb patients when they are sleeping.
