This is an open book exam. You may consult your lecture notes and any assigned readings. Please summarize, rather than quote any information from the textbook or other readings. Do not conduct additional research, and do not cite outside sources in your responses.
Choose two of the questions on the following page (This has already been done). For each question, write an essay of approximately 500 words (or about two double-spaced pages). Your full exam should be no longer than four double-spaced pages.
Include your answers to both questions in a single document. Please format your file with 1-inch margins, double spacing, and 12-point Times New Roman font (or equivalent)
You must write in your own words without outside sources, YOU can only use the resources I have provided and your own knowledge. However, as you are writing from you own knowledge please be mindful that this is for a level 106 class. Each answer requires a thesis statement that must be made clear. It does not have to very extensive, it just has to give the responses direction.
For the first essay you will be responding to question one and you will be writing about Painting 2 (Claude Monet, Gare St. Lazare, 1877 resource 3) in your answer utilise the resources 1, 3, 5, 6 uploaded resources to get your information. Using the information I have given you, please answer the question. Please make sure you talk about how Greenberg detailed the emergence and evolution of modern art, define what dramatic compositions are, define what decorative compositions are, define and discuss divided tone (found in Greenberg essay), define what Impressionism is, discuss the three key features of Impressionism art and how they brought about more flatness of the painting and fewer illusionary effects. Feel free to add anything you feel necessary, however do not go to outside sources, only use the information I have given you. For your analysis on the painting I would refer to resource 1 and 3.
For the second essay you will be responding to question three and you will be writing about Painting 2 (Jackson Pollock, Autumn Rhythm (Number 30), 1950 resource 4) in your answer utilise resources 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 to get your information. Using the information I have given you, please answer the question. Please make sure you talk about modernism what it is, why it took place, and the features of the art that comes from it, discuss the different isms or movements that are in modernism (starting from Impressionism to abstract expressionism…you don’t have to explain each one but describe them the important one is abstract expressionism), define avant-garde, define and discuss abstract expressionism, define and discuss “polyphonic” or all-over painting, discuss the perception of Art by the Chinese (on pages 29 and 31 of resource 2) (this info is in resource 6). The last two pages of resource 2 have a lot of great information about pollock and his inspirations and abstract expressionism.
