In the final part of the course, we have learned about social inequality, which refers to the unequal distribution of rewards in society. We have contrasted the functionalist and conflict perspectives on income inequality and considered beliefs that help maintain inequality in our society. We have also contrasted the functionalist and conflict perspectives on education and discussed how social inequalities are reproduced through our educational system. We have also discussed the concepts social class, race, and gender, considering how they are defined, how they affect how they affect how people are socialized, and the social inequalities that exist based on these factors. For your final exam, write two short essays, 2 pages double-spaced EACH, for each of the following points: • Contrast the functionalist and conflict perspectives on income inequality and education, and then explain how social inequalities are reproduced in society through our educational system • Choose one out of the three statuses we have discussed—social class, race, and gender—and explain how the concept is socially defined in our society, how it affects how people are socialized, and social inequalities that exist For each essay, you should use four sources from the relevant weeks from the final part of the course as supporting evidence, at least three of which must be required course readings from the Ferguson book. You can use videos and other material in the learning modules as your other source, and you are also free to discuss your own personal experiences if you wish. For each essay, you should also explain and apply relevant course concepts, such as “social capital” or “cultural capital”, “prejudice” or “institutional discrimination”, “gender socialization” or the “sex segregation of the workforce”, etc., as appropriate.
