Identify and briefly describe the mission of each component of the formal network and the role each plays (if any) in supporting this particular family.

You spent the first eight modules of this course learning about military families. At the end of those modules, you created a document that demonstrated your ability to translate that knowledge into a military family assessment. In the remaining eight modules, you will learn about Military Family Readiness – what it takes for a military family to be prepared to face the challenges of military life, and the Military Family Readiness System that should be accessible, responsive, and evolving to the needs of military families as they change over time.

A military family’s affiliation with the military may not always be apparent and it may not always occur to them to share that part of who they are with you. As a social worker, it is critically important that you know how to recognize military families in all of their forms and that you know how to engage them as you assess their strengths and needs. Likewise, it is important that you see Military Family Readiness – the ability to meet the challenges of military life – as an underlying objective of your work with military families. And finally, it is imperative that you as a social worker leverage your unique skills in collaboration with other professionals in support of the Military Family Readiness System, as it exists in your local community.

As with the assessment of military families, it is also important when assessing your local community that you do so carefully and assume nothing. This assignment will help you to begin the process of making and acting upon your assessment.

Steps

Review the paper you wrote for Writing Assignment #1. Write a brief re-cap of the work setting that you used and a short descriiption of the family that was the subject of your narrative assessment. Be sure to include the presenting problem.

Based on the DoD definition of Military Family Readiness that is found in DoDI 1342.22 “Military Family Readiness”, describe the specific readiness concerns that this military family is facing or has experienced.

Based on the DoD definition of Military Family Readiness System, create a graphic depiction of the FORMAL network, as it currently exists in your local community to support military families. Feel free to draw or use online tools to create this illustration. Write a brief narrative descriiption of this formal network. Identify and briefly describe the mission of each component of the formal network and the role each plays (if any) in supporting this particular family.

Based on this military family’s assessment, create a graphic depiction of the INFORMAL network that is or could be available to support them. Feel free to draw or use on-line tools to create this illustration. Write a brief narrative descriiption of this informal network. Identify and briefly describe how each member of the informal network could support this family.

Based on your assessment of this military family from Writing Assignment #1, create a brief intervention plan. Given the mission of your social work setting, describe the role you will play in supporting this plan. Then identify members of both the FORMAL and INFORMAL networks of the Military Family Readiness System that you and/or this military family will need to engage to support you and this family in pursuing this intervention. Identify any gaps that exist in support needed and describe how you would address them.

As in Writing Assignment #1, formulate a self-assessment that:

Identifies ethical and/or personal challenges you might face

in working with this military family.

Describes how you would address these challenges.
