At 14 years old, Roshni was coming first in most of her subjects. But by the time she was 15 years old, things had changed; she had failed all of her ten subjects taken at Mock GCSE level. She would hardly look up, had lost interest in food, found it difficult to go to sleep and she had changed her level of interest in hygiene and dressing right.

She told her younger sister that she intended to kill herself. This was because a group of boys had been targeting her and used racist remarks and would smack as they passed her. The latest event was that one of the boys grabbed her and sexually assaulted her.

When she told her mother, she told her to “just ignore them” and “get on with your studies”. A couple of days later, Roshni responded by taking a combination of paracetamol and her father’s hidden stash of Scotch. She is admitted to the child and adolescent mental health ward via the emergency department.
