Analyze

After completing the assigned readings, analyze this case using the concepts of risk factors and protective factors. In your initial thread, identify at least three risk factors and at least one protective factor. Explain how these factors influence resilience.

Two responses to other students are required. High quality responses go beyond a statement such as, “I agree,” or “Good post.” Instead, replying to students’ posts as if you were having a conversation about the topic. High quality replies should be three-five sentences in length. Furthermore, posts and replies use college-level written communication. Case:

Andy is 16 years old and lives with his parents, Greg and Susan, in a small Iowa town. Andy is a junior in high school. He does not like school and is currently failing math and language arts classes. Andy was diagnosed with ADHD when in elementary school. Despite taking medication to treat the condition, he has a hard time concentrating, especially on subjects he doesn’t like. Andy chews tobacco every day, during school, even though it is against school rules. Andy also likes drinking alcohol whether alone or with friends. A few months ago, he was in a car accident after driving 80mph on a gravel road, resulting in a concussion. He seems to have recovered. Andy works about 10 hours a week at a local convenience store. His parents often fight verbally. Greg hits Susan on occasion when fights escalate. Andy has also been hit by his dad. Andy describes his dad as having “a real bad temper.” Andy is close to his Aunt Dana, who currently lives with the family due to a recent divorce.
