Scully and Marolla (1985) contend that rape is a behavior learned socially through interaction with others and that convicted rapists have learned those attitudes and actions that are consistent with sexual aggression against women. They further argue that such learning also includes the acquisition of culturally derived vocabularies of motive, which may ultimately be used to diminish the responsibility of the rapist and to even negotiate a non-deviant identity. Keeping this in mind, draft of response which addresses the following:
Elaborate on some of the rationalizations by rapists and sex offenders for their actions.
Discuss whether their justifications develop as a result of fantasy, psychopathology, etc.
Explain whether you feel that sexual violence in today’s mainstream media has an impact on these rationalizations.
