One of the issues we are currently working on is how to describe interior products or products that are assigned to certain design styles. At the moment, there is still a gap in the literature: the stylistic descriptions are often incomplete and inconsistent. For this reason, we have developed an instrument to remedy this situation. With the instrument, products/design styles can be evaluated on 2 levels (symbolism & aesthetics). Symbolism means: Which associations are connected with the product/ design style (e.g. feminine/masculine, loud/quiet, sustainable/not sustainable). Aesthetics means: what shapes/colors etc. were used in the product/design style? (Ex: round/angular, …). The instrument was developed based on existing scales. For example, the scale on aesthetics based on the paper by Chen & Owen (1997).
In the appendix you can find complete scale (Skala_Symb_Ästh_Designstile). We have already conducted studies with this scale. We showed the test persons pictures of a reading corner designed according to a style or of single products and had them rate the scale.
What should be part of your work?
Theoretical part: Research: Which instruments for the stylistic characterization/classification of products exist in the literature so far? What is missing so far? What problems currently arise from stylistic misclassifications? To what extent does research and practice benefit from a possibility to classify products stylistically cleanly?
– Implementation of a questionnaire: Survey of aesthetic attributes (product-related) (4 styles, 4 products per style): For this, actually only an existing scale would have to be checked once and then programmed in Unipark and the FB sent out
– Evaluation of the data: Comparison with Chen/Owen scale (see appendix): Which items did we use in addition (see Excel doc)? Using different analyses (descriptive and inferential) show the added value of the items we used in addition to the Chen/Owen scale (e.g. this item x helps to discriminate between these two styles)

You can start the introduction or theoretical part and finish the theoretical part by Juli, I will do the Survey and collect the data during this period of time. Afterward, we can talk about and do the part of the “evaluation of the data.”
