1) There are many foil characters in Romeo and Juliet. Foil characters are those who have contrasting personalities. Discuss one pair of foil characters and how their differences are highlighted within the text.
2) The love affair between Romeo and Juliet leads to fighting, bloodshed, threats of suicide, and actual suicides. Are there other movies, books, etc. in which violence and love are commonly linked? If so, discuss these motifs and make connections to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Or, is Shakespeare’s play thematically unique? If so, what elements make the play unique?
3) Who is responsible for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet? Friar Laurence? The two lovers themselves? Their parents? Do a number of people share the blame?
