This week we learn about conic sections that include parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas. If you look at the world around us, you will see some of these shapes and not realize that they are there. A prime example is the Golden Gate Bridge. You will see the suspension cables that hold up the bridge are in the shape of parabolas.

Conic sections are everywhere. It’s interesting this is our topic for this week because as I have been driving my kids to school I always go a specific way because there is a tree that towers over from one side of the road to the other. Going through the tree feels like we are passing through a tunnel. The way the branches bend over the street and on to the other side forms a parabola. I like to think of the road we are passing on acts as the y axis. I will look at this tree differently from now on, thinking of it as a parabola.

It is important for me to know how to apply these conic sections in my future career. I didn’t realize that until finishing this section but in my future career all I measure is conic sections. I plan to be an Ultrasound Technician. We have to be able to measure organs and be able to measure largest and smallest lengths, widths and volumes of our most vital organs. After reading this section I can now relate those to the semi major axis and semi minor axis.

I also work as an Obstetrics Ultrasound Tech and take measurements of fetuses. Getting the picture from directly at the top of the head we are supposed to see an ovular shape. Getting this picture we need to measure what is called the biparietal diameter, which is the measurement from the lateral widest parts of the head. I can now relate this to a parabola, and measuring the widest and furthest length of the parabola

Mirrors are what I learned to be conic sections. I see them in my home
and in public places. It is important because you never know how
important something is until you have to use it or till you learn how
something is created. I am still surprised on how we use to say we will
not need certain things in life or never use them. Mostly because we
feel that technology will do it for us. I feel it is always better to
know how to calculate and use your brain to figure things out. It will
make you stronger than anyone that use technology for everything
