Individual nursing philosophy is a constantly evolving perspective guiding the practice of the professional nurse (Hood, 2014). With that thought in mind, your philosophy paper will also be an evolution culminating in a developed written work. With that thought in mind the Philosophy paper module is your first module, even though the submission is not due until much later in the semester. After completing this module, you will begin the evolution of your personal nursing philosophy.
OBJECTIVES
While this module satisfies the direct achievement of course objective 1, it is important to note the connection between the discussion boards and the philosophy paper. The discussion boards support the philosophy paper by assisting in the development of your philosophy and providing feedback for American Psychological Association (APA) style of professional writing required in this program. Considering this connection the Philosophy Paper ultimately supports each course learning objective(CLO) in this module however, this module is designed to demonstrate achievement of CLO 1. By the end of this module the learner should be able to:
Assimilate the values, beliefs, attitudes, and professional behaviors inherent in the practice of the professional nursing role.
The module learning objectives (MLO) align with the chapter learning objectives found in Leddy & Pepper’s Conceptual Bases of Professional Nursing. By the end of this module the learner should be able to:
Outline the essential elements of a nursing philosophy.
Develop a personal nursing philosophy.
Demonstrate understanding of APA style writing.
Express ideas with clarity utilizing the APA style and formatting.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
Complete the APA Style Basics Tutorial. This module is the online accompaniment to the Publication Manual included in the required text portion of your syllabus. The module will provide a foundation for APA formatting you will utilize when writing you philosophy paper and throughout this program. CLO 1 and MLO 3 & 4
Read chapter 3 and 4 in the Publication Manual 6th edition (American Psychological Association, 2011). CLO 1 and MLO 3 & 4
Read the Sample Paper, it is full of many great APA tips. CLO 1 and MLO 3 & 4
Read pages 62-66 in Hood’s Leddy & Pepper’s conceptual bases of professional nursing (8th ed.): CLO 1 and MLO 1 & 2
What is a nursing philosophy?
What does it meant to be a “professional building block?”
What steps are required for developing a nursing philosophy?
Search the internet for “Sample Nursing Philosophy” and read a few examples: CLO 1 and MLO 1 & 2
Notice how each philosophy is different. There is no right or wrong philosophy of nursing. It is a personalized, evolving process.

ASSIGNMENT
The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate assimilation of the values, beliefs, attitudes, and professional behaviors inherent in the practice of the professional nursing role; by developing a professional paper using APA that describes your philosophy of nursing. This philosophy may encompass the nurse’s role in health care provision, protection of consumers of nursing care, professional values and standards, and professional practice standards. This is an individual project that reflects your individual professional nursing philosophy as it has evolved through completion of the instructional materials noted above.
