For this research paper, you’re going to select one of the listed topics to analyze. Each topic is centered around a time in LGBTQ history before the 1969 Stonewall Riots. Your analysis should take this into consideration — LGBTQ acceptance was not wide-spread, many people did not understand what LGBTQ identities meant (often relying on misconceptions or stereotypes), and images/cultural messages of LGBTQ people/identities were mostly limited to newspaper, radio, and direct interactions with people due to television not reaching wide-spread popularity until the 1950s-60s.
Your research can include the textbook and should also include outside resources (ideally at least 2 resources). Wikipedia, blogs, and other user-driven materials should not be used for this assignment – only scholarly/academic/news sources should be used.
This paper should be 3-4 pages long, double-spaced, using standard Microsoft Word font type/size and one-inch margins, following MLA or APA formatting and reference style (including a reference/works cited page and in-text citations). Your paper should include:
An introduction providing an overview explanation of your topic – this should be general and “set the stage” for your analysis.
Discussion of key figures within your topic
Cultural impact of/by your topic (how was your topic impacted by the society of its time? How did your topic influence society?)
A contemporary analysis of your topic (From your contemporary view and understanding of sexuality/gender identity/LGBTQ community, what surprised you or didn’t about your topic? Do you see the effect of this topic or elements of this topic still present today, such as legal efforts to negatively impact the LGBTQ community? How was your topic impacted by the Stonewall movement?)
