As we enter into the adult stages of development, a universal task of growing up is often the process of committing deeply to another individual (or more than one in polygamous cultures) and starting a family. In the United States, and most of the Western World, our idea of love and marriage is pretty clear — we date who we chose, usually more than one person in our young adult life, fall in love, and then decide IF we want to marry them. Career often comes first, and marriage normally comes only after the couple has fell in love and met numerous expectations that they have for each other, long before that special day happens. To your average American, the idea of an arranged marriage is strange, terrifying, unnatural, and would never dare be considered an option. However, the MAJORITY of marriages across the world are actually arranged in some fashion. Love doesn`t come first — commitment does. You will read about cohabitation, types of marriages, and love in Chapter 11 of your textbook. However, I want you to dive into this “hot topic” now by reading an article from the NY Times and watching a TED Talk video of a man, who seems quite average and “Western” in many ways. What the article and the video try to communicate is a modern approach on arranged marriages. It should be noted that arranged marriages are NOT forced marriages, where the parties involved have no choice and may feel trapped. Arranged is different than forced. After reading and watching, please answer the following questions. You can submit your answers as an attachment to the assignment, or type your answers right into the Text Submission…just like you did in the previous two assignments.
