1. Examine the Chinese documentary film after the 1990s in cultural and historical context, and the role of the filmmaker in a social context.
2. Identify and analyze the themes and prototypes of documentary films, and perceive the form’s evolutionary changes, using specific examples of films and filmmakers, aesthetic aspects, and creative approaches.
3. Demonstrate their understanding of major concepts, theories, and terms of Chinese contemporary film.
4. Evaluate, interpret, critique and articulate the aesthetic features used in the films and their evolution through the last two decades.
Research and write a 1500 word essay about contemporary Chinese documentary films. Use at least four (4) sources. For this assignment, only two (2) of the sources may be from the class readings; the remaining two (2) must be outside sources.
