Research Portfolio
Assignment length: 2500 words
Assignment Task/Instructions:
The third assignment is a research exercise/essay in which you carry out study in an area of truth-politics covered in the course (conspiracy theory, radical right nationalism, big data, capitalist accumulation, colour-blindness)
Prepare an academic essay of 2500 words on either the field of conspiracy theories, radical right nationalism, big data, capitalist accumulation, or colour-blindness; do so by
(1) assembling a portfolio of recent news stories on that field (no more than 6) in a manner that (a) identifies both what each piece is saying about the field and (b) the theoretical orientation through which their insights have been developed (positivist, interpretive, dialectical, kaupapa Māori); and by
(2) discussing the implications of the approaches taken in those new stories for development of further understanding about their field, using for prompts the three questions that Burawoy’s work (2015) poses about contemporary sociological inquiry
what kinds of theoretical understanding do you believe the field requires, and why?
what kind of research questions need to now be asked about the field, and how might those questions factor in our own relations to that field?
and what kinds of counter-moments either exist or might be envisaged, for the pursuit of social change in the field?
