These are very broad topics and you need to limit and narrow your focus in a way that fits the length and nature of this assignment. In your argumentative synthesis, you will have a specific thesis that proposes a claim about the issue you write about, and you will draw upon 4-6 reliable sources to develop and support your argument. You will develop your thesis using a number of supporting ideas that you will analyze the issue discussed and evaluate the research and information gathered to support this idea. Remember that this is an argumentative synthesis, so you need to be argumentative and persuasive by appealing to the three major rhetorical appeals: logos, ethos, and pathos. You also need to avoid the common fallacies we studied earlier in the semester in order to present a strong and convincing argument.
Make sure to use ideas form external sources to develop the claim you want to promote about the issue. It is very helpful to summarize the articles that you will use to develop your synthesis as early as possible in the writing process. Be flexible in choosing from these sources and don’t hesitate to drop or replace one source by a new one if you feel that the one you are using is not helping you achieve your purpose. Remember that you have to generate a claim and list of supporting ideas then use the ideas from the external sources to support your claim and ideas. Make sure that you maintain a good critical distance that distinguishes between your ideas and other people’s ideas. You job is to persuade and present a thorough picture about the differing opinions available out there about the issue you write about. Consider counterarguments and concede to these different ideas whenever you feel is appropriate. Please also remember and utilize the skills we learned earlier in the quarter (quotation, paraphrase, summary, critique, and analysis) in developing your paper.
