CASE STUDY
After seeing Mr. EFG, you return to the ED. Upon your return you are informed that Mrs. HIJ’s 12—month-old male infant was brought into the ED via EMS. Mrs. HIJ called EMS after witnessing a tonic-clonic event. The infant was born vaginally and weighed 3700g at birth. The mother reports that the infant has appeared well, is not taking any medications and they have not recently traveled. The infant has been active for the last week. Mrs. HIJ believes the event lasted about 5 minutes but ceased before EMS arrived. Current vitals include a rectal temp of IDLIF, a heart rate of 130, a respiratory rate of 24 and a systolic BP of lOOmran. Upon evaluating the infant, he appears well and is not in any respiratory distress. His mental status is back to baseline. The infant does not have any rashes or murmurs on exam but has a bulging, erythematosus left tympanic membrane.
After examining the baby, Mrs. HIJ asks you what is wrong with her baby. Your objective is to answer Mrs. HIJ’s question.
