Pay-for-performance is a paragliding
concept for programs targeted at enhancing health care quality, reliability and
perceived benefits. These provisions offer financial incentives for hospitals,
doctors, and other health care professionals to adopt such reforms and achieve
better results for patients. Policymakers and private and public payers,
including Medicare and Medicaid, have made pay-for-performance common. The
Affordable Care Act specifically extends the use of pay-for-performance
programs in Medicare and promotes the expansion of pay-for-performance programs.
The question is if or can pay-for-performance be effective in healthcare at increasing
quality, efficiency and improving patient care.
