Write a literature review on one or two sociolinguistic
variables and analyse the *discourse in a film or television programme
from a sociolinguistic perspective.
Language varies according
to age, gender, social status, and geography. Choose one or two of these sociolinguistic
variables and complete a literature review of up to seven key research
studies on your chosen variables and use this to discuss the *discourse of the
film. Also include key unit sources in your discussion.
Choose a two films or episodes from a tv series in which your
chosen sociolinguistic variables are evident and post your choices here (Links to an external site.) for
approval by your lecturer. The film/episode should be mainly in English. If you
are using any parts not in English, please provide a translation.
In your paper include an
analysis of at least one scene as well as examples from throughout the film to
illustrate your analysis.
Introduce the movie and the
key characters. Focus on a representative scene and contextualise the scene and
the speakers and analyse the scene in depth.
The excerpt should involve
two or more speakers interacting to illustrate and support your analysis and
discussion of the chosen sociolinguistic variable(s). It should be between 3 to
5 minutes long. Include the timing in your transcription. Label each speaker and
number each turn so you can refer to them in your analysis. Use the following
transcription guide from Holmes to transcribe the excerpt (Holmes, 2013). See
example transcription provided.
