“What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I answer: a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim.” Frederick Douglass spoke these words 170 years ago, and yet they still resonate with people today. This is a tough conversation to have, but the work of reckoning with America’s past is hard work. Post an answer to these two questions: 1. Why does racism and injustice continue to be a point of conflict in a country founded on the principle that “all men are created equal”? 2. How should we in the 21st Century understand our national history of violence and oppression towards American Indians, African Americans, and other historically marginalized groups?
