There are a number of issues impacting people in the US within the 21st century, but one issue that continues to increase in concern is the Prison Industrial Complex. Angela Davis’ article this week gives you an overview of how the prison system became an institution of racism and sexism over the 100 years of the 20th century, but I want you to consider the more contemporary elements of the issue. This week’s lecture can help point you in the right direction if this is a new topic for you.
You can select any topic you’d like, but some suggestions include:
Health care (outside of pregnancy)
Pregnancy
Juvenile sentencing/incarceration
Prison food and/or commissary
Solitary confinement
For your post:
Provide a brief overview of your topic (including any information you can share about how this topic may differ depending on it being a for-profit prison or state run)
How might your topic be impacted by an intersectional analysis? (How do race, gender, sexuality, religion, and other identities stand out in these issues?)
What has been some of the biggest changes to your topic over the last few years/decades? (Consider policy changes, advocacy work on the topic, new laws or overturning of protections – whatever is impacting your chosen topic)
