Phonetics oral presentation

General Instruction
Your task is making a 10 min. oral presentation about your own speaker and listener intelligibility, focusing on the latter much more. (obs! You MUST keep the time limit. If you include a video/audio clip of a speaker other than you in the second part, that does not need to be included in the 10 min. time limit)
In order to understand the concepts of ‘speaker intelligibility’ and ‘listener intelligibility, as well as the task description below and make a presentation successfully, you MUST study the five phonetics presentations first.

Task Description
Your phonetics presentation should comprise two parts. Refer to my discussion of the 5th lecture presentation to have an idea of how to make your own presentation.
In the first part of your presentation (as briefly as possible, no more than 3 min.), you will evaluate the speaker intelligibility of your own pronunciation, using the Lingua Franca Core (LFC) and the idea of ‘pausing between thought units’ as the criteria. Start with clearly defining LFC in your own words with your own examples, and then move to discussing how intelligible your pronunciation would be in international communication in view of the LFC as the criteria. If there are potential issues that could make you misunderstood by international listeners, discuss them. Be reminded for this first part of your presentation that ‘sounding like a native speaker’ and ‘being an intelligible speaker’ are two very different things.
In the second part (much more substantial than the first part), you will analyze and discuss your listener intelligibility for a speaker you have chosen. You can choose a person, who you respect/admire and thus you want to improve your listening comprehension (=listener intelligibility) for. For example, in my discussion of my own listener intelligibility in the 5th presentation, which I did as a sample for this second part, I chose the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Wangari Maathai and used her short storytelling to analyze my listener intelligibility for her, as I like her very much and thus wanted to understand her Kenyan English accent better. As I did, you can choose any English speaker, except for those from the UK, US, Australia and Canada, as their English accents are already well-known to you. Choose one whose accent has been challenging for you, and a speech sample by the person. Together with looking at how I present my listener intelligibility for Maathai in the 5th presentation, read about the pronunciation (phonological/phonetic) features of the English variety that the person you chose speaks, from the book World Englishes. Before starting to make your presentation, try to train your listening comprehension (=listener intelligibility) of the chosen speaker through listening repeatedly and thoroughly to a short sound clip of the speaker until you can write down every word correctly. You can also try any other strategies/ways to improve your listener intelligibility.
Present, and discuss the chosen speaker’s pronunciation features, which are intelligible/clear/good, as well as the features that you think are challenging for you. In addition, discuss whether analyzing your listener intelligibility for the speaker has helped you better understand her/him than before, focusing on listening strategies developed during self-training: what worked and what didn’t work; in what ways the training helped understand the speaker better; and how it has impacted them as listeners of diverse Global Englishes speakers. Remember that you’re NOT judging or critically evaluating the chosen speaker’s pronunciation but your listening ability for her/him.
