Your essay are to be assessed analytically on your capability to:
• Demonstrate appropriate essay structure, references and academic style;
• Demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of your chosen issue;
• Evaluate concepts, principles and arguments; and
• Identify appropriate evidence/reasons to support your arguments and insights.
Students are required to write an essay of 1500-Word (excluding reference) to answer any ONE of the following questions.
1. How can we use the work of the prison reformists to understand what is meant by the ‘birth’ of the modern prison? Discuss using examples that draw upon ideas and theories in social control, punishment and imprisonment.
2. Prisons were designed by men for men! Discuss this assertion by considering some of the causes behind the decision to treat female and male offenders differently. Discussion should be refereed to Hong Kong Prison System.
3. Discuss the two major perspectives in justification of punishment and how these perspectives shape the practices of punishment in Hong Kong over the past 40 years.
