Write an essay in which you analyze one or more communicative expressions of gender within the public sphere. You have quite a bit of autonomy regarding what you decide to write your paper on, but some examples include: an analysis of how femininity and/or masculinity is constructed in a specific film or television show, an analysis of how a reproductive justice organization discusses abortion rights, how womanhood is constructed within a specific political trajectory, etc. Essentially, the focus of your paper should be on the interplay between communication and gender, and orient itself toward analytical and critical engagement with how communication constructs, contests, and represents gender within a specific context. Papers must demonstrate:
A clear understanding of feminist approaches to social justice
Insightful analysis of a contemporary cultural artifact (a film, television show, social movement, event, piece of art, communicative interaction, etc.)
The structure of your paper will vary depending on your selected rhetorical artifact, but in general, your paper should include
Details regarding the history/context of your chosen artifact
The use of specific analytical or conceptual tools learned in class to highlight how gender is constructed and/or contested by your artifact
A clear articulation of the effects or implications for gender and/or feminism that your artifact has in the world
Your paper should incorporate support from texts we’ve read in class, as well as additional academic research you find on your topic. You should have a minimum of 5 academic sources. You can use APA, MLA, or Chicago citation styles, and your sources must be correctly cited throughout your paper as a whole, and you should include a bibliography at the end. Paper should be double spaced, and written in times new roman 12 pt font.
