Essay 2: In his essay “Nature,” Ralph Waldo Emerson proposes the principle of “Unity in Variety.” In what ways has the “experiment” of American democracy involved, and, in what ways does it continue to involve the struggle of a heterogeneous society to achieve just that? Show what insights into this struggle can be gleaned from the works of at least three of the authors we have studied.
