Curriculum can be defined as the learning agenda in the middle school,
instruction involves the way this agenda is presented to
learners, and assessment questions how the agenda impacted the learners.
This relationship between curriculum, instruction and assessment has
provoked educational experts to examine educational policies and practices
for many years. In this position paper, your assignment is to select one
aspect of the middle school program (core, encore, exploratory, sports,
advisor/advisee, etc.) and to research its philosophical underpinnings,
historical context, content, recommendations, implementation, practices,
and supporting structures. Your research should emphasis current research
and recommendations from learned associations. National, state, and local
practices/practices should be explained. The pedagogical strategies, issues,
debates, and challenges of the topic should be examined. Then you should
address the counterarguments to your position. Finally, an explanation and
an interpretation of assessments used at the classroom, school, local, state,
and national levels should be addressed – if applicable. Issues or problematic
aspects of the topic should be explained. (A profile on your own classroom
or school may be included.) Then, as an expert on this topic, you should
develop a carefully crafted perspective on your topic in the form of a position
paper. This position paper should be prepared for an intended audience
(policy-makers, educators, parents, public, etc.) and should be designed for
a specific purpose (to inform one’s practice, to change public opinion,
to request funding from outside source, etc.). Suggested length is 10 pages
with added appendices as needed. Please reference the Journals,
Bibliographies and Resource Materials at the end of this Syllabus.
