Discuss a different episode of care for each learning outcome or use the same episode of care for all the 3 module learning outcomes. Discuss the legislation, regulatory
and statutory guidance which inform your professional practice and explore
how this underpins your practice.
The
episode of care should discuss an aspect of practice e.g., informed consent,
informed consent and mental capacity, equality and diversity, confidentiality
and or safeguarding. Your discussion might highlight care which was
implemented to prevent e.g., a breach of confidentiality or safeguarding
concern. Please do not discuss a case if it has resulted in a clinical
incident as this has the potential to breach confidentiality. Ensure that you
do not include the name of parties involved or cite the NHS Trust or care
provider. Include relevant Acts of Parliament e.g., the Mental Capacity Act
(2005), Equality Act (2010), The Care Act (2014), guidance relating to the
gaining of informed consent, Confidentiality legislations and / or health
care guidance which are relevant to your chosen episode of care scenario.
Learning Outcome 2
‘Demonstrate an
understanding of ethical frameworks and their application to decision making
in health and social care’
For
this section, you will link your chosen scenario to the 4 ethical principles:
autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice. You should
provide definitions of each and then apply the ethical principles to your
chosen episode of care scenario.
For
example, if your scenario refers to an occasion when an individual was
providing an informed consent, then you could consider whether the individual
was autonomous, what factors may have affected their ability to act
autonomously eg information giving and understanding of information, was the
intervention in their best interests and what there a risk of potential harm?
Similarly,
you may consider a scenario which considers the importance of maintaining a
person’s right to confidentiality. How does this respect autonomous decision
making? Was the decision in their best interests and why? What are the risks
of harm if confidentiality is not upheld?
Learning Outcome 3
‘Demonstrate an
appreciation of the demands and complexities of professional practice with
respect to the spheres of accountability and responsibility’
Within this learning
outcome, you should consider the professional guidance within The Code (NMC,
2018) and your responsibilities as a pre-registration nursing student as it
relates to a scenario from your practice. Review ‘The Code’ and look at
how the guidance / statements within ‘The Code’ informs your professional
practice and decision making. Consider what it means to be a responsible and
accountable practitioner, and your responsibilities in providing safe and
effective care.
Additional
guidance:
1. Whilst it is not normally acceptable
practice to use sub-headings in an academic essay, you should start each
discussion using the learning outcome as the sub-heading. This will help you
keep focussed on each of the learning outcomes.
2. You are not required to include an
introduction or a conclusion. Each learning outcome should be 1,000 words.
You may wish to provide a brief introduction to the focus of your discussion
within each of the 3 sections and a short concluding statement.
3. If you wish, you can provide a more
detailed description of the scenario(s) within an appendix at the end of your
work. The wordage will not be included in the 3,000-word limit
4. If you wish to use a reflective model
use one of the ones that encourage a precise reflective process such as
