What specific elements of this work do you find to be most striking?

Now that you have been introduced to the incredible phenomenon that was the Harlem Renaissance, I’d like you to complete a research project about three artists who were part of the Harlem Renaissance. Choose three artists (painters, musicians, sculptors, writers). You may use this list to
help you, but you are not limited to the Harlem Renaissance artists listed here.
You will research the lives and legacies of these three individuals. You must view/read two works by these individuals, so I would suggest that you
choose three individuals whose works are easy to find (i.e. the works of writers and painters may be easier to find than the works of dancers
filmmakers).
The only artist you may NOT use for this assignment is Zora Neale Hurston. We will be learning about her in the next lesson, and so I would
like you to choose three others to research.
Please note that you must include artists from two different genres (i.e. you may not discuss three writers or three painters or three
musicians). Additionally, although you may use the writers whose works are included in this lesson, you may not include any of the poems/works included as required readings in this unit. For example, you may include Langston Hughes in your project, but you may not analyze
“The Negro Speaks of Rivers.”
You will then write a research essay that examines these three individuals, their works, and their legacies. Your essay must include the following
elements:
Title page with a title that reflects the common theme/tone/element you are discussing in your research project.
Introduction to the Harlem Renaissance and these three artists. You must also include a thesis statement that explains how these three artists are connected. What common theme/tone/elements do you see in the works of all three of these individuals?
Heading 1: Name of the First Artist
Include a brief history of the artist’s life and why this artist’s works were influential and important.
Discuss specifically one work by this artist and respond to it. Why is this painting/poem/song significant? How does it affect you? What specific elements of this work do you find to be most striking?
How is this work tied to your thesis statement? How is it related to the other works you are discussing in this research project?
Include small images or links to a copy of this work you are examining.
Heading 2: Name of Second Artist
Include all of the information and responses required for the first artist.
Heading 3: Name of Third Artist
Include all of the information and responses required for the first and second artists.
Include a conclusion to your essay that ties everything in your essay together and again reflects on your thesis statement.
You must include the following in your essay:
Headings
Images or links to multimedia resources
Quotes from four outside sources in addition to Drop Me Off in Harlem. This means that you must have five sources for your essay.
Include in-text citations that are used correctly to cite the sources of the quotes you include in your essay.
Each analysis of a Harlem Renaissance artist (each section) should be a minimum of 600 words in length.
