Compare and contrast what it would have been like to live in Europe in about 800 AD, 1215 AD and 1630 AD.

The exam will consist of two sections, which are weighted equally. Please complete both sections of the exam.
Part 1: Connection IDs: Please choose two (2) sets of terms listed below to identify briefly. An “A” response will consist of a concise explanation of each of the terms, why they are significant, and how they might be connected thematically in the course. A strong response for each set should be no less than 300 words, but will likely not exceed 600 words. The IDs will count for half of the overall exam grade.

Part 2: Essay: Please choose one (1) of the essay questions below to respond to briefly. An “A” response will generally be no less 750 words and no more 1200 and will present a strong thesis which is well supported by evidence from both the lecture and readings, including a minimum of two references from the in-class readings. Please use parenthetical citations for any direct references.
1. Evaluate the validity of the following statement: “During the period studied in this course (roughly 750 to 1650 AD) religion and politics became increasingly separated.”
2. Compare and contrast what it would have been like to live in Europe in about 800 AD, 1215 AD and 1630 AD. Please be as specific as you can about where you are talking about and how certain practices (e.g. religious rites, power structures, availability of education, possibilities for travel, interaction with foreigners, etc.) would vary in these three periods.
Extra Credit (1 pt): Which figure from this class would you most like to have lunch with? What would you like to talk with him/her about over the lunch?
