The film, Ikiru, brings to light the final stage of life, what Erikson calls Ego Integrity vs. Despair, and of course with this a reawakening of the previous stages of life and their associated crises and earned virtues. Discuss this, incorporating film analysis (considering facets such as- story-line of the film, character content, and cinematic elements) with course content regarding death and dying. What do the film and our course teach us about what it means to be human, what it means to live, and how we should be living?
Conduct a thoughtful analysis. In doing so, think about what the film was trying to accomplish, big picture–what was the main message–and break down the details–what were the smaller messages and components/different elements of the film–that formed the picture.
Incorporate a discussion of what you learned from the book Man’s Search for Meaning (our required reading assignment this semester). Examples of topics you may want to consider here: meaning of life, authentically living, freedom, happiness.
