The Radical Revision and Rhetorical Addendum

For this project you will radically revise your researched argument from project #2 by entering a new rhetorical situation. You’ll chose a new audience with some stake in the issue, and you’ll produce a new nonfiction genre that will best reach that audience.
Unlike our previous assignments, you will select both your audience and your genre. Your purpose may be the same as in your magazine article—to argue—but you may decide that informing or educating is a better purpose given your new audience and genre, or that this audience needs a different type of argument or one different in scope.
Additional Details
Your radical revision can take many forms, so long as there is a written component—a letter to your local representative, a blog targeted at a particular demographic, a YouTube video (with transcript) for specific stakeholders, a pamphlet to distribute on campus, etc. Your project should be a fitting response to this new situation (new purpose, new genre, new audience, etc.). In other words, the genre should be appropriate for your audience and message, it should be mindful of the typical purposes and standard characteristics of your selected genre—which entails using appropriate design and language—and should be composed for an audience reachable through it.
First you will determine your audience, which you’ll then need to analyze. This will help you select your genre, which you will then analyze. You’ll demonstrate this work by submitting a Rhetorical Addendum with your final radical revision. We’ll work on this addendum before and during the drafting of your radical revision, as it will inform your writing choices.
Your job in this addendum is to show what you know about your audience and genre, and explain how it shaped your final product, as follows:
Describe who your audience is, why you selected them (including their stake in this issue), and what you know about this audience that will help you successfully write to them. Then discuss a few specific writing choices that you made in your radical revision based on your audience awareness. Research your audience! Cite any sources that you used to research your audience and include them in your references or works cited page.
Discuss the genre that you are producing to reach this audience and why it is appropriate for writing to them. Explain what you have learned about your genre that is enacted in your radical revision (e.g. structure, layout, typical language, and writing conventions) and how you learned it. Provide citations or links for genre samples and “how to” resources that you used.
Your genre will determine your radical revision length; select a genre that will require at least 750 words (or the intellectual equivalent thereof). Your rhetorical addendum should be ~650+ words.
Research Requirements:
Use the sources and research necessary for this rhetorical situation. You can and should use your research from the previous assignment, but you may also need new information. Use a citation style or approach that’s genre-appropriate.
