Explain Descartes’ purpose in the Meditations on First Philosophy, then carefully explain Hume’s argument.

Descartes sought an indubitable superstructure in the sciences (a body of scientific knowledge immune from doubt). Hume argues that any attempt to ground matters of fact reasoning (scientific reasoning) on the conformity principle is circular, since the conformity principle itself rests within the domain of matters of fact reasoning.
