The purpose of this assignment is to introduce the process of advocacy by creating a campaign to support a piece of legislation becoming law. This is your strategy for implementing the policy change you proposed or supported in your Policy Brief. You will have five minutes to give a presentation that outlines the steps you would take to create a task-oriented campaign to see the policy passed in the next 1-2 years. You will incorporate information you learned about the legislative process, persuasive messaging, and writing to create a detailed outline of steps in your advocacy campaign. You are speaking as an advocate to a group of social workers.
You will submit two items for this assignment.
First, you will submit 1 full-page single-spaced document (2 pages absolute maximum) that includes:
A goal date for an identified action by policymakers and three associated objectives with the advocacy campaign
Identify targeted policymakers to support the policy for passage
Target list of potential allies (i.e. social service organizations, advocacy organizations, elected officials, associations, union, etc.)
Identify opponents and others who may resist supporting the policy
Key action proposed for the coalition (i.e. meetings, commercial air dates, fundraising goals, etc.)
Timeline for policy influence through the coalition
Any fundraising needs
2-3 major talking points for allies to use in conversation with targeted elected officials
