Draft paper requirement:
The draft should be c. 3-4 pages.
Possible inquiries:
Does the opening establish a clear starting point for the paper (a thesis, or at least a focussed topic)? Would some other part of the draft make a better introduction?
Did you feel that their argument or perspective was communicated clearly and backed up by evidence (cited sources)?
What subtle elements/differences were illuminated between the two musical works?
Did the thesis clearly state the subjects that are to be compared/contrasted or both? how?
Did the author organize their thoughts via subjects in a linear style or by individual points in which each point is being discussed in relation to a subject. In your opinion, did their approach work?
How does the draft hold together? Which paragraphs don’t connect well with preceding or subsequent ones?
How did the author use pointed phrases of contrast/comparison in order to signal to their readers how the two compositions are being analyzed?
Was their focus too broad or too specific? What kinds of details helped frame the authors opinion clearly while keeping the writing engaging for the reader?
Is the conclusion merely repetitive, or does it synthesize ideas, suggest new directions of thought, re-evaluate the introductory statements?
Were sources correctly cited in-text and on a reference/bibliography page (APA or MLA)?
Other thoughts or constructive criticism?
Final paper requirement：
Choose two musical works, either from the same composer (artist) or different composers, and develop an argument about them while comparing and contrasting musical elements present in each work. Show how electronic instruments/devices and musical characteristics such as genre, styles, rhythms, harmonies, texts/lyrics, textures (i.e. how tempo, melody, and harmony work together), cultural/social aspects are represented in each and examine/discuss how the musical period in which each work was written may have contributed to and/or was impacted by either work. Use terms from your readings, slides, and personal research.
