Anthology of short fiction

choose your theme – it might be based around authorship (e.g. an anthology of black British short story writers), around genre (e.g. an anthology of flash fiction), or period (e.g. an anthology of 1930s short fiction), or theory (e.g. an anthology of postcolonial short fiction), or a topic or interest (e.g. an anthology of short fiction set in space!). When we do the Assessment Preparation week you’ll have an opportunity to think about this in more detail.

Next, you will want to think about your intended audience. Who are you hoping to sell your book to? General readers? students? Teachers? This might determine the kinds of stories you choose and how you frame the book so be clear about this early on.

Now you get to put together your publication! You must include the following elements as a minimum:

A front cover with the title for your anthology. This is an opportunity to be creative! You might use MS Publisher or Canva to help you design your cover.
A contents list which will include a minimum of 8 short stories of your choice as well as listing the other elements of the anthology. You can have more than 8, if you wish – entirely up to you.
The first of which will be a critical introduction to the anthology (200 words ). Any references for the introduction will be listed immediately afterwards.
[The next items would be the full text of your 8 short stories – obviously you won’t type all of these out so you just have to imagine they are printed after the introduction! **See below for a creative writing opportunity too…]
A reading group guide to one of the short stories in the anthology. This could take a variety of forms, which will be discussed over the course of the module. (For individuals you should aim for around 1000 word. Any references for the reading guide will be listed immediately afterwards.
A back cover to your book, including a 200-300 word blurb. Again, you could use Publisher or Canva or the like to make this look nice and professional!
