Discussion Question: Review the challenges that human resource departments face in today’s business environment. Which issues are most daunting? Why?
Dission Answer:
Challenges that human resource departments face in today’s business environment
Layoffs and Outsourcing: Layoffs tend to increase employees’ levels of stress, burnout, insecurity and decrease morale, job satisfaction and trust. Such changes are linked to greater turnover, diminished willingness of employees to help one another and poorer job/company performance. Outsourcing is challenging due to conflicts between in-house and outsourced teams. This may be due to cultural differences, gaps in communication and negative perception about the outsourced company.
Wage Gap: Most American believe that CEO pay has gotten out of hand and is too high. We can all agree that appropriate pay for experience, approach, profile, education, training and sacrifices is fair due to top performance. CEOs are making decisions every day and they should get paid more than a typical worker but +300x than the typical worker is excessive and exorbitant. It’s understood that higher positions will demand higher standards and consequently higher pay packages, but each day seems like the pay gap between an average worker and an executive grows absurdly and eventually leads to other problems.
Older Workers: The baby boomer generation is preparing for retirement which put us in a potential crisis-the loss of key talent and experience through massive retirements. Also, one of the challenges working with older work force is generally they may face many problems like aged related physical and mental decline that come with growing older. Another challenge is that older employees have more seniority and get higher salaries which means increased wages.
Younger Workers: Millennials- as the first digital-native generation- and Gen Z, the skills they bring to the table, from social networking to their in-depth understanding of technology, open minds, multitaskers, and multicultural perspective, could benefit every department. The challenge comes when some of these employees come an unprecedented sense of entitlement. In millennials’ case, some people ask for a salary far higher that what they’re worth, or expect a job immediately after graduating from college just because they graduated. Although there’s evidence that shows that entitled people may actually be more creative, managing this group can sometimes be a challenge because that behavior could create a bad work environment.
Women Workers: Although women have come a long way, women still face considerable barriers, obstacles and challenges in the workplace. Some of the biggest challenges women face in today’s workplace are: pregnancy discrimination, sexual harassment, gender pay gap, career advancement, lack of childcare support, exclusion in male-dominated fields. While the ground may be considerably more level than how it was a few decades ago, there is still a long way before we can say that there’s true equality in the workplace.
Work-Life Balance: Workers across all ages/genders actively pursue more flexibility and work-life balance. The challenge of reducing work hours is that it has the potential to reduce productivity. Also another challenge is high turnover rates, which could impact the company creating extra costs such as: rehiring, training, etc.
Lawsuits: The United States has become a very litigious society. Based on the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charges of workplace discrimination occur fairly frequently. Many lawsuits are legitimate, this can cost a business its reputation. Others are plain silly but this can still cost a company thousands or millions of dollars. Most common workplace lawsuits are: personal injury, overtime, discrimination, harassment and wrongful termination.
Which issues are more daunting and why?
In 2022, one of the most daunting challenges companies have to deal with is creating a healthy working environment both psychologically and physically. Companies are offering better and more varied benefits and expanding coverage to mental health services. Benefits are not enough to improve health and well-being so there’s a need to improve employee health and wellness probably offering more flexibility, more time off, or better managing schedules and workloads to provent employees from feeling overwhelmed.
