9.1 Analyzing Individual vs. Structural Solutions

First Post:
As Rogat-Loeb points out, we have the hardest time identifying and engaging in activities that might address the cause of the problems that concern us. So, that’s our challenge with this Discussion. Use the grid Just Good Business (2008) in Module 9 to analyze the activities that you are engaging in this quarter. Are you 1) providing resources, 2) teaching skills, 3) advocating to change the cause of the problem or 4) researching the problem to identify causes or solutions? OR you may find helpful the table called Kinds of Citizens under Readings which calls efforts to address root causes of social problems “justice-oriented”. Please relate your comments to a specific idea from Rogat-Loeb, Ch 3 or 8.
Second Post:
Respond to two other posts, suggesting activities that might address the cause of the problem that the student is discussing.
You’ll be graded (1 point each) for 1) posting on time; 2) responding to other students’ posts and 3) relating your comments to quotes or specific ideas from the readings. All Discussions end on Sunday. See Discussion rubric.

1)Paul Rogat-Loeb stated, “if we shrink from the world, our soul shrinks”, I had to take a second and reflect on that statement. It is a powerful statement. Our emotions come from the soul that helps us to feel compassion for those around us. The analogy would be if I stay in my house all day and all night, every day we won’t have to engagement with society.
I choose to be out in the community, to want to be apart of change to better the lives of for our children. My parents, husband, kids, and close friends all know I am a compassionate person and I always get over my head helping other, that I forget to take care of myself. I related mostly to the Just Good Business table. In addition to creating solutions from the effects of those making decisions not in the best interests of the youth, I am also advocating to bring back certain programs whether it be for profit or a community organization.
2)My project this quarter is mostly focused on providing resources to those who are impacted by the issue. By soliciting funds online that are funneled directly to those who are struggling to access abortion, I am addressing the symptom versus the cause of the issue. I am comfortable with that role for now because another focus during my project has been to educate myself on the abortion access movement, my potential role within it, and the impact limited abortion access can have on the most marginalized in our society. Ideally, with the knowledge, I gain I will be able to confidently move into the role of advocacy work of ensuring abortion access for all. After reading Chapter 3 earlier in the semester, it was clear to me that the constraints on my time in the season of my life were not an excuse to not be an involved citizen. Using that information, my project is focused on utilizing my current skill set and available time and building my skill set
