For this assignment, I want you to practice using the Rogerian argument strategies to write 4+ pages that disagrees on some level with Singer’s “The Singer Solution to World Poverty.” Your response should meet the expectations for the Rogerian Argument checklist and should persuasively argue your position. Remember to be generous in your reading of Singer’s position, but ultimately still persuasive that your position is the best one. Be careful to bring in sufficient, clear evidence and reasoning to support your point while also carefully, but generously explaining and responding to Singer’s argument.
Pro-Tip: even if you disagree with several of Singer’s claims, focus on only one disagreement for this essay. Your goal isn’t to “win” or even prove that Singer is wrong, but to show your understand and persuade your reader– in part, because of your understanding– to agree with your position.
A personal letter addressed to Singer; don’t assume personal familiarity with Singer (i.e. don’t call him “Peter” unless you actually know him). Write this as as a letter to someone you’ve read, disagree with, but do not know as an acquaintance or friend.
An example of a minor disagreement: you might agree with Singer’s core positions that we need to address global poverty and that we should donate as much as we can to do so. However, perhaps you disagree with his definition of “luxury” spending and believe that it’s too restrictive. You might argue that a small amount of luxury spending motivates people to donate more, instead of less. To some degree, this is the classic “bread and roses” argument championed by labor movements.
