What is an institution and why are we critiquing them? You might imagine throughout the course that we will engage in reading, writing and critical thinking in ways that are intimately connected. The reading we do will inspire and inform the writing projects we undertake in both direct and indirect ways. In this case, we can understand Paulo Freire’s “Pedagogy of the Oppressed” to serve as a model for critiquing institutions. In that text, he critically examines the educational institution and identifies how it has essentially failed, then provides clear ideas for how it can improve fulfilling its social contract. In a similar way, this first writing project will adapt this approach and use it as a conceit for you to gain familiarity with the writing process and engage with it meaningfully in ways that situate you within a position of power.
