Instructions: This exercise will give you practice organizing an argument and formatting your assignments in MLA Style. Choose one of the controversial issues from the list on http://www.procon.org/.
Once you’ve chosen an issue, take a position on it. Are you pro or con? After you’ve decided whether you are for or against the issue, answer the five questions below.
Questions:
1. How might you grab your audience’s attention at the beginning of your argument?
2. What is your claim? Write out an argumentative thesis statement that states your position on the issue.
3. What reasons cause you to take this position? (You should have at least three reasons that argue your position. Each reason should be written out in a complete sentence.)
4. What reasons might cause someone to take the position opposite to yours? (You should have at least two reasons that argue the other side of the issue from yours. Each opposing reason should be written out in a complete sentence.)
5. How might you call your audience to action in the conclusion of the argument?
Format: Type your answers on a Word document and format it according to MLA guidelines. **NOTE: You do not have to write out this argument in essay form. You only need to provide the answers to the questions above, and they may be numbered. Remember to write out all of your answers in complete sentences, observing the rules of proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
