Feedlots and Animal Rights
Review chapter 10 that starts on page 240 in then online version of the text. Animal rights activists denounce factory farming because they say it mistreats animals. Chickens, pigs, and cattle are crowded together in small pens for their entire lives, fattened up, and slaughtered.
Many people believe that non-human animals themselves have rights. Most of us extend rights to our pets, such as cats and dogs. Some countries have given primates, i.e., our closest surviving kin, such as gorillas and chimpanzees, rights similar to humans. Some people think we should consider all animals to have these rights. Where do you draw the line? Is there a line?
What level of rights should we extend to our farm animals? Should they have any rights? Is factory farming cruel compared to traditional farming of animals? Is factory farming necessary for feeding the world? What are your opinions about these issues and why?
Direction: answer the following questions using the text book in 250 words at least.
Then response to two people in 150 words each response.

This one is kind of hard because I’m kind of on the fence with should they and should they not. If we didn’t give farm animals rights these current conditions they live in would stay the same. Mass producing these farm animals right now may seem like its the best option to make sure that we keep up with the upkeep of meat on the market and other needs from the animals but also at what cost? Most farm animals aren’t grown on a natural farm. Most are jammed into a tiny holding area were they are forced to sleep and grow on their own feces and urine. That personally I don’t think any living thing should have to go through. I also am not a firm believer on using chemicals to enhance these animals nor the production. I understand that it increases the growing process in some instances and may even make that animal larger but then we are slaughtering these animals prematurely and processing these animals that are full of chemicals that we are then eating. I know that not much of this will change especially over the years however one thing i would like to see change for these animals in a sense of “having rights” is a good living habitat. Most farm animals especially factory farming we don’t get to give these animals that experience however this change may not even be possible as the full maturity process for some of these animals could take years and as the climate changes and some places having droughts it could also hinder these animals in other ways than these factories are.

After Reading through chapter 10 I personally think the bigger issue lies within the population growing bigger and bigger. These feedlots did not exist back in the day because of one reason and that was the population. The sanitary of these feed lots would be the biggest concern to me. I think they have improved with rules and regulations over the years but I am sure some would say it needs to improve more. Not a lot of people are going to quit eating meat and turn vegetarian because some activists are upset. I would be willing to bet some of these activists are the same ones cooking up a steak on the weekend. I think if they can improve the overall operation it is not considered animal abuse. I am a hunter and I am a firm believer in if you kill something you eat it. I believe pets that live in our home are different from porky the pig living on the farm. Home animals give us a since of security and make us happy where porky may make us some food or put some money in our pockets. I believe most pets now a days do have rights, turn the local news on I am sure someone is going to jail for animal abuse. 50 years ago the cops were not showing up because you beat your dog or its chained up in -30* weather. I do not agree with people who mistreat their own pets or farm animals and believe they should be punished for it. Farm animals should be treated fair and have some sort of normalcy while living .
