This week we talked about citizenship behavior being a component of job performance. In general, however, citizenship is not a formal part of performance evaluations. Should it be? In other words, should supervisors be rating their employees on citizenship behaviors when determining who gets raises and promotions? Or, should performance evaluations be solely based on task performance? What are the upsides to making citizenship a part of performance evaluations? What are the downsides? Can you really make people be helpful, loyal, and courteous?
