Reading the Genesis Creation Accounts

Read the two creation accounts in Genesis chapters 1 and 2 along with Engaging the Christian Scriptures, 31-38 (Section Titled: The Primeval History). Reflect on the content of these two passages and how each one describes the creation of the world.

Are Genesis 1 and 2 literal, historical accounts of the creation of the world? Explain why you answer yes or no. What kind of texts are Genesis 1 and 2? What leads you to your view? Explain why you read these texts this way?
What would you say is the purpose of the Genesis creation accounts? Are they meant to be scientific accounts of the origins of the universe?
If the Genesis passages are not a scientific, historical account does this lessen their value or their truth?

The purpose of the assignment is to develop and argue your perspective on the creation narratives. The point is not to arrive at the instructor or textbook’s conclusion, but to argue why you think yours makes the most sense of these texts. Support your perspective with reasons.
