themes between films

View two films: “The Crucible” and “Good Night, and Good Luck”
A. As you watched both films, certain shared themes should have become apparent. What are these themes? How were they manifested? How were they resolved?
B. How does your textbook define “moral panic”? What were the respective moral panics in 1692 Salem and during the McCarthy era?
C. The reading for the week referenced the Functionalism of Emile Durkheim, Robert Merton and Kai Erikson, specifically as it relates to the manifest and latent functions of moral panics. Apply this analysis to both the Salem Witch Trials at issue in the “Crucible” and the McCarthy and HUAC hearings in “Good Night, and Good Luck”. In other words, what were the manifest and latent functions of both episodes of US history?
D. Somewhere in your analysis, you should have mentioned the term “witchhunt”. Define this term as a social and political phenomenon (hint: not the obvious or literal definition…use the one in the textbook. The link is below to the rreading for B,C, and D
