Purpose:
The primary focus for this essay will be developing a controlling idea, especially a specific and arguable thesis. In this assignment, you will be modeling your essay on one textual reading. You need to demonstrate a strong connection between the source text and your reaction. The four aspects of this type of essay is that it is honest, informed, clear, and well supported. To that end you will also demonstrate the ability to apply appropriate MLA standards to the paper, especially in text citations and works cited page.
Prompt:
Using one of the three articles presented to you, you will write an essay that examines, explains, and defends your personal reaction to the reading. You will do this by exploring why you liked the reading, or didn’t like it, agreed with the author, or found the piece interesting or confusing. There are no right or wrong reactions to the materials.
Audience:
Your readers are college students who are looking to you for a clear position, argument and conclusion based on textual evidence to help them decide if your theories can explain the prompt. They are looking for you to present a well-supported opinion on the material
Format:
The final draft must be 800 – 1,000 words, typed, in MLA format, in the polished prose of a final draft. You must cite from the speech properly. You may use one additional source for support, but it again must be cited properly. You must provide proper in-text citations with a Works Cited page accordingly and submit the final draft as a digital copy on Canvas.
Grading:
It is worth a maximum of 100 points and these points are distributed among the expectations of the assignment. These include:
A unified coherent text that reflects critical reading on your part of the text;
Development of a clear thesis based on a logical framework for argumentation;
Solid organization that reflects a unified argument at the paragraph and essay level; and
Proper use of the conventions of written English.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS:
Make sure that you do not simply state your response and move on to the next idea. “I liked this. I didn’t like that”, “This interested me”, “This confused me”.

What is the relationship between the words on the page and your reaction?
